History of Apple Valley MN

The roots of Apple Valley MN can be traced back to the mid-1800s when it was just a farming community known as Lebanon Township. It is believed that the first settlers in the area came from the east coast at around 1855. On April 6, 1858, the Dakota County Board of Commissioners created Union Township. Two years later, the board met again and changed the boundaries of the township. The Lebanon Township was created from a portion of the former Union Township.

On May 11, 1858, the first town meeting was held in a home near what is now the Westview Elementary School. For its first century, the name of Lebanon Township remained the same. In 1881, the town’s population was 252 and jumped to 585 in 1960.
In the mid-1950s, the township began to transform. Residential neighborhoods were developed in the spring of 1955. In 1962, a Planning Commission was established. In 1963, Orrin Thompson began building in the area and selected the name Apple Valley for several of his flats on either side of County Road 42. Thompson had an apple tree at each home developed. Three years later, a volunteer fire department was organized.

During the general election of 1968, residents voted to incorporate the Town of Lebanon as the Village of Apple Valley. The community became a statutory city on January 1, 1974.
